How long have you been in business?
Redwood Massage & Sauna (formerly Redwood City Sauna) was opened in 1964 by a Finnish family.
Beverly & Harold May took over in 1999 after the initial owner passed away and the long time employee who inherited it was too ill to run it. Beverly has been offering massages in Redwood City since 1983 - in the profession since 1973.
We have won the Daily News "Best Of" massage 4 times now with back to back wins in 2012 and 2013 !
What is your primary product or service?
Therapeutic massages, with or without saunas. We design each session based on client goals, from relaxation to rehabilitation.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I loved massage as a child, and told my parents I would marry a masseur. Instead, in my twenties I began taking classes so that I could trade with friends. It made sense to me to make a living out of work I love doing, and I continue to take classes and enjoy massage all these years later.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
As mentioned, I am a full time extremely experienced massage therapist. Most other businesses offering massage are owned by business people, not massage therapists. Often they are most concerned about profits and standardized sessions. The best quality massages are often by private massage therapists in small offices. Redwood Massage offers the skill and caring of the private practice, since the therapists work for themselves, but we also have the ability to see up to 5 clients at a time, and are open 7 days a week until 9 pm. Very few places offer showers or saunas like we do. We are also one of the few places that considers an hour massage to be a full 60 minutes - not a "professional" hour and we don't charge for the time it takes to change clothes.

We have only one location.

We are located at 797 Arguello St, Redwood City. From our website you can click on google maps for directions. From Whipple Ave, coming from 101, you would turn left on Arguello (just before El Camino) and we are 1/4 mile on the right, just before the market.
If taking Caltrain,exit at Sequoia Station,go 1.5 blocks north towards Brewster.

Beverly and Harold (Hal) May own the business. Hal manages it, and our staff are independent therapists who contract for use of the facilities.
